One of the most rewarding things about the Stars Align series at The Whistler is you never know what will happen when artists get together for a one-off collaboration; and this session — featuring Nick Dellacroce of Bongripper and Omar Gonzalez of Rectal Hygienics — is no different.

Nick and Omar make some pretty heavy music with their respective bands, but this collaboration veers light-years away from the metal and punk they're known for, and lands firmly in the ambient/drone world.

Nick and Omar performed two pieces, the second of which is presented here. They’re both sweeping in scope, creating vast atmospheres of sound. Live, these pieces were truly a visceral experience: you could feel the ebbs and flows of the music deep within your chest.

All this sound came from a mishmash of machinery that the duo employed. Nick uses drum loops and synthesizers, while Omar runs a bunch of tape loops and processes them on the fly. One of the cassettes he used on "Set Two" is actually a recording of a mother’s heartbeat and if you close your eyes, it's not hard to imagine a return to the womb. “You have to be an open-minded listener to get whatever the hell we’re doing,” Omar said.“It’s all about mood and texture.”

This session is definitely one best listened to with some headphones on. Plug in and let it wash over you.
